Degree modifiers and monotonicity

چکیده

This paper concerns the question of what it takes to be a degree modifier.1 In particular, I propose an account of why only certain predicates can be assigned degree manipulating functions. The proposal relies on a semantic typology of predicates which is based on the (monotonicity) inferences licensed by such predicates. The main observation is that on the assumption that any predicate could in principle be turned into an adverb of degree, only a strict subset will result in informative interpretations.

Stability of Self-Consolidating Concrete Containing Different Viscosity Modifiers

The main objective of this paper is to assess the effect of different viscosity-enhancing admixture (VEA) types and concentrations on deformability and stability of self-consolidating concrete (SCC). Two polysaccharide-based VEAs, one cellulose-based VEA, and a modified-startch VEA are used in this investigation. Regardless of polymer type, results showed that the incorporation of VEA leads to ...

Singular count pseudo-partitives1

Inversion-constructions, like too tasty of a cake and a disaster of a conference, have generally been treated separately from superficially similar-looking pseudo-partitives, like three gallons of water. I argue for an analysis that unifies the syntax and semantics of the two constructions through a proposal about the head of that appears in both. Both constructions involve the composition of t...

Pre-Noun Modifiers as a Means to Describe Product Characteristics

The article deals with the characteristics of noun phrases functioning in pre-position. Pre-noun modifiers, or attributive modifiers, are among the high-capacity structures in the contemporary English language, as they enable to devoid of prepositions and to describe objects in a laconic way. The goal of this research was to analyze the way scholars interpret this linguistic structure today, as...

Sum Formula for Maximal Abstract Monotonicity and Abstract Rockafellar’s Surjectivity Theorem

In this paper, we present an example in which the sum of two maximal abstract monotone operators is maximal. Also, we shall show that the necessary condition for Rockafellar’s surjectivity which was obtained in ([19], Theorem 4.3) can be sufficient.

The syntax and semantics of multiple degree modification in English

Focusing on the examples of multiple degree modification, this paper argues that the class of degree expressions in English is syntactically and semantically diverse, subdivided both according to the semantic effects of its members and according to the extent to which they permit, and participate in, multiple layers of modification. We argue that these two factors are linked, and result in (at ...
